Review of LCD Technology and a Perspective of its Future
Tuesday, December 15, 2009 - UCLA, California Nanosystems Institute building
Professor of Optics Shin-Tson Wu from the University of Central Florida
Dr. Shin-Tson Wu will provide a review of LCD Technology and cover a technology that could supplant current LCD panels using polymer-stabilized blue-phase LCDs. This Kerr-effect-induced isotropic-to-anisotropic switching mechanism offers four revolutionary features:
1) No need for alignment layer. 2) Submillisecond response time which enables color sequential display with a RGB LED backlight. As a result, pigment color filters are eliminated which leads to 3X higher optical efficiency, 3X higher resolution, and wider color gamut. 3) Wide and symmetric viewing angle without using compensation films, and 4) Cell gap insensitivity. Operating voltage and light efficiency and challenges remain, but. promising approaches to make widespread commercialization possible will be discussed.
Dr. Wu worked at Hughes Research Laboratories at Malibu for 18 years has been at UCF since 2001. He has authored 5 books on Flat Panel Displays, Liquid Crystal Devices, Microdisplays, Reflective Liquid Crystal Displays, and Optics and Nonlinear Optics of Liquid Crystals as well as many other book chapters and papers. He has 80 issued and pending patents. As a SID Fellow and has won the 2008 Jan Rajchman Prize. Dr. Wu is also a IEEE, OSA, and SPIE Fellow.
Dr. Wu is returning from Taiwan and has graciously agreed to share his recent work at our meeting.
Parking is normally $10, but if you are one of the first 25 people to sign up with Larry Iboshi it will be free. If you can't come until 8:00PM, the meeting will be free except for the parking which will be free if you are on the list. Check in with the parking kiosk on Westwood Blvd for directions to the CNSI (California Nanosystems Institute). http://cnsi.ctrl.ucla.edu/file-sharing/publicview/facilities/DirectionsCNSI.pdf
